Court Overturns Results of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party Congress
On July 5, the Nasimi District Court of Baku resolved to invalidate the results of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APF) congress held on June 24 of the previous year. This decision followed a complaint by Aydin Aliyev, a congress participant.
Seymur Hazi, Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, discussed the situation with Voice of America. He explained that the congress included elections for the chairman and internal bodies of the party, and decisions were made during the event. Hazi noted that instead of reporting to the Congress as Chairman of the Control and Inspection Commission, Aydin Aliyev used the platform for an unfounded speech, left the Congress unfinished, and did not observe the elections. The court upheld Aliyev's appeal and invalidated the congress's decisions. According to Hazi, the congress was transparent and open to the press.
Ali Karimli, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, condemned the court's decision as illegal. He emphasized that the voting and vote-counting processes were transparent and documented by journalists. Karimli was elected chairman by secret ballot with near-unanimous support. He claimed that the Ministry of Justice had not registered his election as chairman for the past year due to political reasons.
Aydin Aliyev said that it was his duty as Chairman of the Control-Inspection Commission to register violations of the party charter. He claimed that he was prevented from accessing party documents despite his efforts. He cited Article 21.5 of the Law "On Political Parties," which allows a party member to file a complaint regarding the activities of the party's bodies. Aliyev applied to the Nasimi District Court on August 8, 2023, and after nearly a year of legal proceedings, the court upheld his claim and invalidated the congress results.
