Cross-Border Electricity Trade: Iran and Russia to Connect via Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan

| News, Economy, Azerbaijan

On July 16, Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian said Iran and Russia would exchange electricity through Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.

Mehrabian noted: "For the exchange of electricity with Russia, we used two routes - the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia-Georgia, and we are in the process of final negotiations and implementation."

Iran's Energy Minister added that Iran seeks to exchange electricity with some of its neighbors without payment. "Shortly, we will start exchanging electricity with Russia through Azerbaijan. Also on the agenda is the connection to the Russian energy system through the territory of Armenia and Georgia," he concluded.

Notably, the project will increase the volume of barter through which Yerevan receives Iranian gas and supplies electricity in exchange.

Earlier, Gnel Sanosyan, the head of the Ministry of Territorial Administration of Armenia, and Ali Akbar Mehrabian spoke in Tehran about the completion of the construction of the third high-voltage transmission line.
