Dagestan Can Become Major Player in Rare-Metal Industry, Says Region's Head
Sergey Melikov, the head of Dagestan, and Mikhail Kovalchuk, the President of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute," discussed the development of a deposit of rare-metal geothermal resources in the region.
"Today, two deposits have been explored in the republic. Their volume and potential are being studied. We understand how important this metal is for the military-industrial complex. Dagestan could make its proposals in this regard," Melikov said.
Head of the Administration of Makhachkala Rizvan Gazimagomedov presented a project for the integrated development of the territories of the Tarumovsky and Berikey deposits of rare-metal geothermal resources. He emphasized that their development will allow Russia to become a leader in the highly profitable extraction of rare chemical elements from underground geothermal brines. At the same time, environmentally friendly technology for the removal of solid salt solutions has been developed, which means that it is possible to use the waters of the Tarumovskoye field to extract valuable components: such as lithium, bromine, iodine, potassium, magnesium, sodium chloride.
Melikov and Kovalchuk also discussed the development of viticulture. "Our republic accounts for 29% of Russia's vineyards. Quite deservedly, we are among the leaders in the development of this industry. Therefore, they talked about the possibility of creating a nursery complex in Dagestan," Melikov said.
Following Kovalchuk's visit, the region's government stated that he proposed to open a branch of the Kurchatov Institute in Dagestan and allocate a site for breeding seedlings of autochthonous varieties.
