| News, Security, Georgia, Abkhazia

On December 19, a shooting occurred near the [de facto] Abkhazian Parliament building, Deputy Prosecutor General Ruslan Tyrkba stated. An investigative-operative team was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Preliminary reports indicated that MPs Kan Kvarchia and Vakhtangi Golandzia were injured and transported to the Republican Hospital. It was later confirmed that Vakhtangi Golandzia had succumbed to injuries incompatible with life.

Acting [de facto] President of Abkhazia, Badra Gunba, was briefed on the incident by the head of the State Security Service, Dmitry Dbar, Sokhumi City Prosecutor Alkhas Agumav, and Sokhumi City Police Chief Astamur Khagush. An investigation has been launched, and the area was cordoned off as investigative measures were carried out.

Gunba visited the Republican Hospital, where medical officials, including the Health Minister and the hospital’s chief doctor, confirmed Golandzia's death.

Acting Interior Minister Robert Kiut identified MP Adgur Kharazia as the suspect in the shooting. Kiut reported that Kharazia fled the scene following the incident. The Prosecutor General's Office announced its intention to strip Kharazia of parliamentary immunity, after which criminal charges would be filed against him.

According to the de facto Prosecutor General's Office, Kharazia fired four shots at MP Kan Kvarchia during a parliamentary committee meeting, striking him in the shoulder and head. Kvarchia’s condition has since stabilized. Golandzia, aged 55, was fatally wounded while attempting to intervene.

Kharazia reportedly has a history of violent behavior. In December 2020, he was involved in a confrontation with Almas Shakryl, the former mayor of Sokhumi, during which Shakryl sustained injuries. The conflict was allegedly linked to disputes over business interests concerning land and resort plots in Auadkhara.

The Prosecutor General's Office stated that investigative actions are ongoing, including questioning individuals present at the committee meeting and conducting an examination of Golandzia’s body. Efforts to locate Kharazia are also underway.
