Debate on Armenia's National Symbols Sparked by Assembly Speaker

| News, Politics, Armenia

On January 30, Alen Simonyan, the Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly, expressed his belief that the discussion regarding changing the national emblem and anthem is necessary.

Simonyan emphasized, "It is clear to me that the anthem of the Republic of Armenia should be changed sooner or later." He suggested that the new anthem should be authentically Armenian and composed according to the established standards of national anthems.

While Simonyan appreciates the music of Aram Khachatryan as magnificent and uniquely Armenian, he believes it is essential to replace the current foreign anthem. He also raised concerns about the depiction of Armenia in the coat of arms, stating, "Armenia cannot be depicted underwater, a lion cannot resemble a Facebook emoji, and the sword that protects Armenia cannot be chained."

However, the Spokesperson of Alen Simonyan clarified that these remarks reflect the personal opinion of the Speaker of the National Assembly. She highlighted that no draft law is proposed for changing the national anthem or coat of arms.
