EU and Georgia Concerned Over Russia's Naval Base Plan in Occupied Abkhazia
The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Gharibashvili, responded to the announcement to establish the base of the Russian military-naval fleet in Ochamchire, occupied Abkhazia. He said this is a continuation of the occupation and worsens the situation.
In a conversation with the media, the Prime Minister said he participated in the round table discussion on multilateralism and geostrategic issues. Gharibashvili specified that they reviewed the security issues of Georgia and informed the participants about the situation in Abkhazia. In the Spanish city of Granada, the Prime Minister is attending the third summit of the European political union.
"I informed them about the information spread this morning. You know that it has become known that Russia is already planning to build a 3rd military base, in this case, a naval base, on our territory, of course, without our permission. This is the result of occupation. This is the continuation of the occupation, of course, that's how we perceive this illegal decision, naturally. I told them that it makes this situation even worse, which comes with the occupation. Everyone knows very well that Georgia is in a very particular situation since a significant part of the country's territory is occupied. Taking into account all this, the country can develop, advance, and reform in such a way as to maintain peace and stability. It really needs dexterity, and we really have something to say in this direction," Gharibashvili said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia responded with a statement to the information related to the plan for the placement of the Russian naval fleet base in Ochamchire. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia is concerned about this plan. The ministry assesses such actions as "another provocative attempt" aimed at “legitimizing the illegal occupation of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions.”
The de facto President of the separatist Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, spoke in an interview with "Izvestia" where he mentioned the agreement on the location of a new permanent base of the Russian Navy in Ochamchiri district.
Currently, the 7th Russian military base and the Federal Security Service border department are located in the occupied Abkhazia. Since 2008, the Russian military base has been located in Gali. In addition to the city, there are Russian bases in the villages along the occupation line in Lekukhona, Saberio, and Chuburkhinji. Security in these villages is mainly controlled by Russian soldiers.
Russian President Vladimir Putin did not say anything about the naval base during his meeting with the de facto leader of Abkhazia on October 4. However, Bzhania stated that he wants to participate in integration processes initiated by the Russian side.
Ambassador of the European Union in Georgia Paweł Herczyński responded to the question of the media about the placement of a permanent point of the Russian military-marine base in the Ochamchiri region of Abkhazia occupied by Russia. According to the ambassador, the statement is alarming and represents a violation of the 2008 cease-fire agreement.
