EU Announces Over €50 Million Support Package for Armenia
On June 4, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, announced that the European Union is preparing a support package for Armenia worth more than €50 million in response to Russia's restrictions on imports of Armenian agricultural products. Following a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, von der Leyen stated that Moscow's actions constitute economic pressure on Armenia and described the measures as "nothing short of economic coercion." She emphasized that the extension of export restrictions on Armenian goods represents an attempt to use economic relations as a political tool. "We know this playbook all too well. This is why Europe stands firmly with Armenia," von der Leyen stated.
According to her, the EU package will include immediate financial assistance exceeding €50 million. Additional support measures are also being prepared, including steps aimed at facilitating trade for certain Armenian exports, particularly agricultural and food products. Von der Leyen further noted that the European Union will continue efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between European and Armenian businesses in line with agreements reached during the recent summit in Yerevan. She added that the next stage of these initiatives will be discussed at the ministerial meeting of the Connectivity Platform scheduled for June 23.
To coordinate the implementation of the planned measures, the two sides agreed to establish a joint EU-Armenia Task Force. According to von der Leyen, the body will oversee the execution of current initiatives and coordinate any additional measures adopted in the future. "To ensure effective coordination on all these fronts, we agreed to set a joint EU-Armenia Task Force. This will oversee the implementation of all these initiatives and any further measures in the future," von der Leyen stated.
