European Parliament condemns the occupation of Eastern Partnership countries territories

On 20 June, the European Parliament adopted resolution 2019/2209 (INI) entitled “Recommendation of the European Parliament to the Council, Commission and EU Vice-President / High Representative for Foreign affairs and Security policy over the Eastern Partnership (EaP) Program before the June (2020) Summit,” where it condemned the occupation of the EaP territories, reported Eurasia Diary.

The document was prepared by a member of the European Parliament from Lithuania Petras Austrevicius with the participation of co-rapporteurs Radoslaw Sikorski, Anna Fotygi (both Poland), Attila Ara-Kovacs (Hungary) and Marketa Gregorova (Czech Republic).

In detail, the document “strongly condemns the continued violations of fundamental principles and norms of international law in the EaP region, notably destabilisation, invasion, the occupation and annexation of territories of several EaP countries by the Russian Federation and its refusal to comply with the decisions of international tribunals and courts.”

Regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the resolution demands withdrawal of Armenian forces from all occupied territories of Azerbaijan and reiterates EU’s commitment to territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within its internationally recognised borders. Also, in the European Parliament’s new resolution, as like in the previous document 10 years ago, there was no direct mention of the “right to self-determination” of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The document also noted that “the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Eastern Partnership countries are still infringed by unresolved regional conflicts, external aggression and the ongoing occupation of some of these countries.”
