Former Shamil Basayev Militants Detained in Kabardino-Balkaria
In Kabardino-Balkaria (KBR), the Federal Security Service (FSB) has arrested three former militants of Shamil Basayev's and Khattab's groups who took part in the murder of 84 Pskov paratroopers in 2000.
"Irrefutable evidence of the involvement of KBR residents in this crime has been collected: Anzor Batyrov, Aslanbek Kazanchev and Taimuraz Nakusov, who were part of the so-called Kabardian Jamaat," law enforcement officials said.
They were detained in Baksan, Chegem and the village of Nartan. The detainees are charged with "banditry", "armed rebellion" and "assaulting a law enforcement officer".
Notably, Shamil Basayev was a prominent figure in the Chechen independence movement and a key commander during the Chechen conflicts of the 1990s and early 2000s. One of the most notorious acts associated with Basayev was the Beslan school siege in 2004. A group of Chechen militants, including Basayev's fighters, seized a school in the town of Beslan in North Ossetia, Russia. The siege lasted several days and resulted in the deaths of more than 330 people, including many children. Shamil Basayev's legacy remains highly controversial. While some people in Chechnya and other regions see him as a hero and martyr, others see him as a ruthless terrorist responsible for the loss of many innocent lives.
