Georgia Accused of Violating Sanctions Against Russia, Ministry of Finance Denies Claims
On May 1, the Georgian Ministry of Finance responded to allegations that Georgia is not complying with the sanctions regime against Russia.
The ministry said: "In response to yet another disinformation disseminated by some media outlets in recent days on the enforcement of international sanctions by Georgia, the Ministry of Finance of Georgia once again categorically declares that the country has been completely adhering to the established rules from day one when international sanctions were imposed, and it has been pursuing tight monitoring over every and all types of customs operations at the border of the country."
"Considering the above-mentioned, every commodity indicated in the list defined by the countries engaged in sanctioning, including the household appliances mentioned in the footage, if and when transported through Georgia, are subject to special customs control and are thoroughly inspected. Also, additional inspection applies to the certificates of origin accompanying the commodities to ensure that Georgia is not used as a means of evasion," the report added.
The information emphasized, "With full responsibility, we hereby declare that no violation has occurred in view of international sanctions in Georgia, evidenced by the statements made by EU and US Ambassadors in their media appearances. Thus, any entity disseminating accusations towards Georgia on the alleged sanctions violation must present proof of evidence. Otherwise, it will be deemed that this is an intentional action to harm the country's reputation by spreading the fake news, which will not remain without a due response from our side."
