Georgia and Scandinavian Countries Forge Stronger Ties at NATO Vilnius Summit

Within the framework of the NATO Vilnius summit, an inaugural working meeting was held in the format of Georgia and the Scandinavian countries, attended by the foreign ministers of Georgia, Denmark, Sweden, and the state secretary of Finland.

The ministers welcomed the first meeting in the mentioned format. They expressed their readiness to continue coordination in this format in the future. “It was emphasized that Georgia considers the Scandinavian countries as valuable friends and reliable partners. The parties welcomed the growing dynamics of relations between Georgia and the Scandinavian countries, which is manifested by frequent exchanges of high-level visits and intensive political dialogue on various issues.”

Ilia Darchiashvili once again confirmed Georgia's commitment to European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations to his colleagues. He talked about the country's tangible results from this stage. He emphasized that Georgia successfully fulfills the 12 recommendations of the European Commission and is actively working to obtain candidate status. In addition, the minister drew attention to the successful Vilnius summit and stated that Georgia received important messages at the summit. Also, he paid particular attention to the importance of unwavering support of the mentioned countries on the path of Georgia's integration into the European Union and NATO.

It was noted at the meeting that the opening of the Norwegian and Danish diplomatic missions in Tbilisi is another important stage that takes the relations between the countries to an even higher level. The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia thanked his colleagues for supporting the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, including active involvement in the EU monitoring mission, which is especially important in light of the deteriorating security situation.

At the meeting, the parties agreed that regional partnership platforms are gaining increasing importance. It should be noted that the working breakfast was held at the initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Lars Loke Rasmussen. After the extended meeting, a bilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Georgia and Denmark was held.

The Georgian minister also met with his Lithuanian counterpart, Gabrielius Landsbergis, in the framework of the NATO summit in Vilnius.

Georgia's participation and Lithuania's support at the Vilnius NATO summit were also emphasized. It was noted that the summit would be fruitful, both in terms of Georgia's integration into NATO and expressing Georgia's strong support from the side of the alliance.

"At the meeting, the parties focused on the successful cooperation of the two countries, both in bilateral and multilateral formats and on the existing potential for the further development of partnership relations. In addition, the important steps taken by Georgia on the path of European and Euro-Atlantic integration were highlighted. Among them, the conversation touched on the steps taken by Georgia to obtain the status of a candidate for the European Union and the existing progress in the implementation of 12 recommendations. From the point of view of integration into NATO, attention was paid to the process of implementation of the decisions made at the Madrid Summit. In addition, the importance of Lithuania's support for the success of Georgia's integration process in the European Union and NATO.

In addition, the security environment created in the region and the situation created in the occupied territories of Georgia were also discussed at the meeting. The head of the Foreign Ministry of Georgia thanked Lithuania for its steadfast support of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The ministers also noted the importance of strengthening high-level ties between the two countries and the activation of high-level visits," the information states.
