Georgia Invests on Upgrading Kutaisi Airport and New Airport in Telavi

On September 4, Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili announced that the Government would spend $32 million on upgrading the infrastructure at the Kutaisi International Airport.
Davitashvili said the Airport needs to not only be perfect for passenger transportation but also fully realize its potential, noting the existing runway had numerous issues and cannot be repaired. "The renovated Airport will mean that we will have the opportunity to receive all types of aircraft, both passenger and cargo," he said. He said the new 3.5-kilometre runway project was underway and added construction should take 18 months to complete.
On the same day, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that the Government had allocated about $10 million for the construction of a new and modern airport on the site of an existing airfield in the city of Telavi in Georgia’s eastern Kakheti region.
Garibashvili added that the airport was expected to receive its first passengers in May or June 2024. "In total, there will be six modern airports in the country, and Telavi airport will create additional attractions for tourists and citizens," Garibashvili noted. The head of the Government said the design and construction of the new facilities would be launched this year, with the project's total cost reaching about $12 million.
