Georgia Signs Convention Establishing Ukraine Compensation Commission
On December 17, Maka Botchorishvili, the Foreign Minister of Georgia, signed an international convention establishing a special commission to review Ukraine’s claims for compensation for damages. The document had been adopted during a diplomatic conference in The Hague on December 16, and Botchorishvili stated that Georgia’s participation aligned with its "long-term policy of supporting international law," while emphasizing that "Ukraine must have all the necessary tools to obtain compensation for damages to the country and its population".
"Egregious violations of international norms must not go unpunished," Botchorishvili stated, adding that Georgia, as one of the founders of the Registry of Damages, welcomed the move as a step toward creating an international compensation mechanism. According to the Georgian Foreign Ministry, Botchorishvili emphasized that the international claims commission would serve as an integral part of this mechanism aimed at addressing the consequences of the damage inflicted on Ukraine and its population.
