Georgia Supports UN Resolution Criticizing Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

| News, Georgia

On October 13, the United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution criticizing Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territories with the support of 143 nations, including Georgia.

Georgia has co-sponsored the resolution, claiming that Russia has temporarily seized the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia because of aggression breaching Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence.

In his address to the assembly, Davit Bakradze, the UN Ambassador for Georgia, denounced Russia's illegitimate takeover of Ukrainian territory and urged support for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

"Let me be quite clear. I am the permanent representative of the nation that Russia seized in 2008. Time, words, and the actions we take today all have importance. It is important for both the United Nations and the coming generations' future. It can address and resolve the most important problems facing the globe in the months and years to come," he added. The Ambassador said it is a joint obligation to make a strong statement in support of the UN charter's values of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili also hailed the approval of a resolution on Ukraine at the United Nations General Assembly. President said: "That is what global solidarity looks like. Georgia is part of that solidarity. We stand with Ukraine."

The resolution demands that the annexation attempts stop now and urges other states, the UN, and international organizations to reject Russia's annexation claims.
