Georgian Dream Accuses West of Anti-Georgian Bias and Hidden Agendas
Georgia’s ruling party criticized the financial sanctions and visa restrictions imposed by Western countries on Georgian officials and politicians. It assessed these decisions as "anti-Georgian steps" and claimed they were organized by the "Global War Party" and "Deep State" networks. A statement published by the Georgian Dream Political Council on January 8, 2025, declared: “The aforementioned decisions should once again be assessed as an anti-Georgian step that undermines the trust of Georgian society in Western institutions.”
Georgian Dream argued that the stronger the influence of the "Deep State," the more "anti-Georgian" the attitude of the respective country toward the Georgian state and people. The statement asserted: "Without exception, every specific politician and bureaucrat who is distinguished by anti-Georgian statements—be it the president, prime minister, parliamentarian, MEP, diplomat, or official—is a member of the 'Deep State' network, which acts not in the interests of the American or European people, but at the behest of the Global War Party."
In the statement, Georgian Dream claimed: "The demands and threats voiced behind closed doors at the time have finally taken on a public forum. 'Either you go to war, or I will punish you'—this is the simple message that Georgia and the Georgian people receive from the Global War Party." According to the statement, "The Global War Party is irritated by the uncompromising position of the Georgian people, which did not allow the collective national movement, i.e., the agency of the Global War Party, to return to power and drag Georgia into war again."
The party also responded to Western sanctions imposed on party founder Bidzina Ivanishvili and Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri. The statement noted that Ivanishvili replaced "bloody authoritarianism with democratic governance" and increased Georgia's economy "from 28 billion to 90 billion." As for Gomelauri, it argued that sanctions against him and the "hero police officers" were imposed because "three violent coup attempts in the last two years were effectively thwarted."
The ruling party warned of the danger of a "Ukrainian scenario" for Georgia, stating: "As long as there is a first front in Ukraine, there will always be an interest in a second front in Georgia." The party claimed that the Deep State network has plunged many countries of the world into war, and its most severe consequences have been "reflected on a friendly country—Ukraine."
Georgian Dream praised US President-elect Donald Trump for his efforts to dismantle the Deep State. The statement noted: "President Trump's successful completion of the task of dismantling the Deep State can provide a qualitative reset of Georgian-American relations."
The party stated that EU membership would be considered only after 2030, when "the EU will fully overcome the problem of informal oligarchic influence and the Deep State, which will create the appropriate conditions for Georgia's accession to the EU."
