Georgian Dream Advocates Constitutional Amendments to Secure 'Peace and Sovereignty'

| News, Politics, Georgia

In the statement released on August 20, the ruling party "Georgian Dream" appealed to its supporters by naming four reasons why it intends to obtain a constitutional majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Among the mentioned reasons are declaring the "collective national movement" unconstitutional and banning "gay propaganda."

"Georgian Dream," says that by maintaining its power, "peace, traditional values and the idea of state sovereignty will prevail in Georgia" and that in order to ensure "long-term, sustainable peace and security of Georgia," the party needs to obtain a constitutional majority in the upcoming elections (113 mandates out of 150).

"First of all, we need to obtain a constitutional majority in order to improve the quality of the political system," the statement said. According to "Georgian Dream," it is impossible to achieve the mentioned goal "without removing the collective "National Movement" from politics." "Georgian Dream" promises to initiate a legal process soon after the elections, as a result of which the "United National Movement" and all its satellites or successor parties will be declared unconstitutional. As a rule, "Georgian Dream" declares all its opponents as a "collective national movement," including opposition parties, non-governmental organizations, and even President Salome Zourabichvili.

The reason for such legal prohibition is the responsibility of the "National Movement" in the war of August 2008. In addition, the statement talks about the "collective national movement" attempt to "open the second front" in the Russia-Ukraine war. According to "Georgian Dream," "Collective National Movement" still has strong external patrons. "We must show these forces that the removal of the collective "National Movement" from the political system is the decision of the largest, constitutional majority of the Georgian people," the statement reads.

"Georgian Dream" also explained the need for a constitutional majority by the necessity of adopting anti-LGBT constitutional legislation. "The spread of pseudo-liberal ideology in the world and in Georgia is gradually becoming more and more dangerous," the statement says, and the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics is cited as an example of this trend, which, according to the ruling party, "once again reminded us of the extent of the danger associated with the spread of pseudo-liberal ideology." According to the ruling party, obtaining a constitutional majority will allow it to adopt a constitutional law that will "strengthen the protection of family values and minors to the highest constitutional level."

"After the adoption of the constitutional law, no one will ever be able to turn his head to the so-called same-sex marriage." The legalization of civil partnership, adoption of a child by a same-sex couple, or gender reassignment surgery for the so-called other than men and women. The legal determination of sex, propaganda of pseudo-liberal ideology in educational institutions or mass media, and other vices, which have already led many countries to very serious consequences", reads the statement.

"Georgian Dream" names two more reasons, although their content is vague. "Georgian Dream" says that "in case of restoring the territorial integrity of Georgia peacefully, it will be necessary to amend the Constitution of Georgia so that the system of governance and the territorial state arrangement of Georgia will be in line with the new reality". The statement mentions that the opposition will not support the constitutional amendments "taking into account the anti-state approaches" and will create an "obstacle" in the mentioned process. However, the statement "Georgian Dream" does not say what type of constitutional changes it is talking about.

The ruling party also does not talk about the details of the fourth reason. The statement only says that the regulation of the mentioned issue by the constitution "may be of great importance for the protection of Georgia's identity and national values." The party claims that consultations are underway, and the public will probably know its position on the issue by the end of the month.

Additionally, the "Georgian Dream" warns voters that if it does not remain in power, the country may face war. The statement says that if the opposition wins in 2020 or 2021, "Georgia would be in a worse situation than Ukraine today, and we would no longer have a country."

"Georgian Dream" says that the main task of the country in the upcoming elections is "to strengthen peace as much as possible." He encourages voters to participate in the elections and notes that each vote is crucial.

The statement also mentions that "the more votes the "Georgian Dream" gets, the faster and more effectively Georgia's relations with the United States of America and the European Union will be restarted, and the more firmly Georgia's national interests will be protected in the international arena."
