Georgian Dream's Head Refutes Accusations of Ignoring US Sanctions
On October 30, Transparency International Georgia asserted that Georgian authorities had not followed effective steps in implementing the sanctions, which were placed on the judges for their suspected involvement in significant corruption and the former official for his alleged ties to Russian intelligence.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, denied accusations made by non-governmental organizations that the US Department of State's sanctions against Georgian judges and the previous prosecutor general had been left without response by Georgian authorities.
In his response, Kobakhidze said the Georgian authorities had attempted to obtain evidence from the partners to support the relevant charges, but to no avail. "Moreover, we heard a completely unconvincing explanation that the imposition of visa restrictions for judges was based on information received from open sources - namely, televisions, newspapers, and other mass media," he added.
The Georgian Dream Chair asserted that Otar Partskhaladze's [one of the close allies of Bidzina Ivanishvili] inclusion on the list of sanctioned individuals and the imposition of visa restrictions on the judges were not based on any facts or evidence and that there had previously been frequent cases when our strategic partner [the US] faced awkward situation due to the irresponsible actions of rich NGOs. "Even just consider the scandal associated with the results of parallel voting in the [2020] elections, for which one of the rich NGOs created the greatest inconvenience," he said in reference to the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED) NGO that admitted to a mistake in its data of the parallel vote count in early December 2020 that the domestic opposition parties had used for several weeks as evidence that the elections were fabricated.
On October 31, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili alleged that the United States Agency for International Development had known about the false data of the parallel vote count released by the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy during Georgia’s 2020 Parliamentary Elections and had chosen to hide the fact from Georgian citizens.
"It is a fact that false data of the parallel vote count was being released [following the Elections], it is a fact that the USAID knew and hid it from Georgian citizens - I have been waiting for an answer [for the alleged decision] for a long time, and I will receive it," Papuashvili said. "In the 2020 Elections, the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy released results of a false parallel vote count. The head of ISFED said she soon informed the USAID office that the data was not correct. The USAID representative knew at least a month before it became public to the Georgian citizens that the results of the parallel vote count were false, and no one told Georgian citizens," the official alleged.
As previously reported by Caucasus Watch, on September 14, Otar Partskhaladze, one of the close allies of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of Georgian Dream, was subjected to sanctions by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Department of the Treasury. According to the State Department, Partskhaladze was singled out for his attempts to sway Georgian politics and society while working closely with the Russian Federal Security Service [FSB] agent.
