Georgian PM Calls for Improved Ties with the United States
"We propose to the American side that the strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States be restored from a clean slate with a specific roadmap," Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated while discussing relations between Georgia and the United States.
According to Kobakhidze, if there is a "similar interest" from the American side, the relations can be reset:
"We cannot discuss internal matters here. What is most important is that we are fully prepared to reset Georgian-American relations. Moreover, we propose to the American side that the strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States be restored from a clean slate with a specific roadmap. If there is a similar interest from the American side, of course, relations will be reset. Naturally, we will await the position of the presidential administration," Kobakhidze stated.
In addition, Kobakhidze addressed US President Donald Trump’s comments regarding the potential avoidance of war in Ukraine, emphasizing that "any war can be avoided":
"We have been saying for a very long time that the war in Ukraine could have been avoided. Unfortunately, what happened cannot be undone. This has caused devastating consequences for our friendly country, Ukraine. Of course, any war can be avoided. The 2008 war could have been easily avoided, and the same is true for the war in Ukraine. However, specific forces, the so-called Deep State, and the global war party did everything to ensure that war broke out in Ukraine," the Prime Minister remarked.
Kobakhidze also told journalists that sanctions were being used as a tool of blackmail against Georgia, claiming that the only aim was to draw the country into the war. According to him, such blackmail would have no impact under any circumstances:
"This issue holds little interest for us. Sanctions were used as a tool of blackmail against the country. The sole interest was to involve Georgia in the war. However, under no circumstances will we allow a step to be taken that would lead to the destruction of our country. Accordingly, this blackmail will have no effect," Kobakhidze stated.
He further added:
“As for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, working there is, of course, significant for us, but we will act depending on the decisions made by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. I would like to remind you that for years, including during my tenure as the head of the Georgian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, we have raised the issue of non-recognition of the Russian delegation’s authority, together with other countries. At that time, the Parliamentary Assembly did not support our position.”
"Today, it is utterly laughable that under the pretext of so-called pro-Russian sentiments, the radical opposition and their patrons are trying to suspend the mandate of the Georgian delegation. Such initiatives are entirely anti-Georgian, but they cannot harm Georgia’s national interests in any way," Kobakhidze concluded.
