Georgian PM Promises Prosperous 2025, Focuses on Education and Infrastructure
On January 20, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, addressed the Executive Government Meeting, marking the first government session of 2025.
He expressed confidence that the year would be prosperous for both the Georgian government and the country, emphasizing the responsibility to fulfill the government's four-year plan. The prime minister particularly welcomed Shalva Gogoladze, who was attending the meeting for the first time as a minister, and wished him success, particularly in the sports sector.
Kobakhidze also referenced the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, highlighting his ambitious plan to defeat the "deep state" and its potential impact on Georgia-US relations. The prime minister expressed hope that Trump's victory would help ensure global peace and correct values, signaling Georgia's readiness to reset relations with the US. He also underlined the importance of addressing radicalism and “liberal fascism,” which he believed hindered the country's development.
The prime minister thanked Mikheil Kavelaishvili, the President of Georgia [unrecognized by many Western leaders], for pardoning 613 prisoners, and praised the cooperation between government agencies that enabled this humane decision. Kobakhidze further outlined ambitious projects, such as the airport and stadium projects, stressing the need for intense work to meet deadlines, including hosting the Champions League final.
On education reform, Kobakhidze announced the creation of a government commission to overhaul Georgia’s higher education system, aiming to bring its quality to the level of European countries within four years. He emphasized the urgency of the task and the need for intensive work.
Discussing economic performance, the prime minister noted that Georgia's economy grew by approximately 9% in 2024, surpassing 90 billion GEL, with a goal to exceed 100 billion GEL in 2025. He highlighted the record performance in tourism, with revenues surpassing 4.4 billion USD. Despite challenges from political opposition, Kobakhidze affirmed the government's focus on economic development and its commitment to benefiting all citizens. He criticized the radical opposition for working against the country's progress, asserting that the government would continue to prioritize the welfare of the people.
