Georgian President Zourabichvili Expresses Concern Over Russian Interference in Upcoming Elections

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

In her interview with Sky News on 27 February, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili expressed her concerns about possible Russian interference in the upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 2024.

President Zourabichvili stressed that concerns about Russian interference should go beyond Georgia, as the issue affects many other countries as well. She highlighted Georgia's unique situation, with 20% of its territory currently under Russian occupation, which adds to the gravity of the situation.
Referring to experiences in other countries, President Zourabichvili highlighted the well-known tactics of Russian interference in elections and its ability to engage in hybrid warfare against other countries. She specifically mentioned concerns about the funding of pro-Russian fringe groups within Georgia, although it is difficult for the population to imagine such groups given the ongoing occupation.

President Zourabichvili stressed the need for caution and vigilance, particularly in the face of potential anti-Western propaganda and support for pro-Russian entities. She warned that Georgia was likely to face increased efforts of this kind in the run-up to the elections.
Recalling Georgia's history of Russian invasions and drawing parallels with Ukraine, she reiterated Georgia's commitment to move closer to the European Union as its primary perspective for the future.
