Georgian Prime Minister Offers US to Resume Georgian-American Relations
Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists that the restarting of relations between the USA and Georgia is in the interests of both states. Moreover, the Prime Minister noted, the most important thing now is for Georgia to see the steps taken by the US administration.
"Once again we have heard a number of unfair assessments regarding Georgia, it was actually an attack on the state of Georgia by certain politicians, which is very sad. We ... want to offer a different agenda - this is the reset agenda. You know how many things have gone wrong in these relations over the past 3-4 years. Against this background, Georgian-American relations need a reset and this is our offer to our American partners. Against this background, the statements that we have heard are counterproductive, as are a number of actions that have been taken in recent weeks. I hope that in the end our American partners will make pragmatic decisions that will contribute to the restart of relations, which is in the interests of both Georgia and the United States. I hope that our American partners will take such a step.
I would like to emphasize that during this discussion no one mentioned that in recent years about 10 TV stations have been closed in Moldova and it was not a subject of discussion in the US Congress and Senate. No one mentioned that Moldova is still a CIS state. No one has mentioned that there are serious problems in limiting political pluralism in Moldova. Practically, there is no political and media pluralism anymore. From this we can conclude that there is an interest in Georgia that does not exist in Moldova. Otherwise, no one can explain why they don't talk about the problems in Moldova. The main thing is that the US government should adopt a correct, pragmatic and fair position towards Georgia. In such a case it is possible to achieve a reset in Georgian-American relations. If there is good will and appropriate steps on their part, this turning point will be ensured, which is in the interests of both Georgia and the US," Kobakhidze said.
According to him, today Georgia is in a waiting mode.
"We are waiting for pragmatic, fair and correct steps towards Georgia. We hope that such attacks on Georgia as we heard yesterday will stop. This is in the interests of both Georgia and the United States. It is important to speak out against the incomprehensible actions of the American authorities, in the form of visa restrictions, etc., which were connected first with the court, then with the executive power. In order to reset the relations, first of all it is necessary to be fair in the relations. From our side, all possible steps will be taken to reset relations. The main thing is to see the steps taken by the US government. We expect the war to end in a year at the most, if the Republicans win in the US, maybe it will end in January. As soon as the war ends, the situation in the region will calm down, the attitude towards Georgia will change immediately. This is our optimistic expectation.
The reset of relations does not depend a priori on the victory of the Republicans. If the Democrats win, the war will probably end in a year; if the Republicans win, the war will probably end in six months. In both cases, the war will end, the situation in the region will calm down, and the attitude towards Georgia will change. A priori, our optimism does not depend on the victory of the Republicans," Kobakhidze said.
