Ghukasyan Asserts Armenia’s Independence Won’t Be Affected by Union State, Warns of Assassination Plot

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On April 19, Vardan Ghukasyan, the newly elected opposition Mayor of Gyumri, stated that joining the Union State would not compromise Armenia’s independence and claimed that an assassination attempt might be in preparation against him.

During an interview with journalists before his inauguration ceremony, Vardan Ghukasyan emphasized that Armenia’s independence would remain intact if it joined the Union State.

Ghukasyan also raised serious concerns about his personal safety, alleging that an attempt on his life was being planned. He stated, “We have information that something harmful is being prepared against me,” and warned that if another attack were to occur, the facts would be shared with presidents and institutions worldwide to expose potential perpetrators.

He accused certain circles of attempting to associate him with criminals to justify an attack, describing this as groundwork for a possible assassination. Ghukasyan referenced a previous attempt on his life in 2007, which remains unresolved, and added, “If something similar happens, it will become a global sensation.”

As previously reported by Caucasus Watch, Vardan Ghukasyan was elected Mayor of Gyumri on April 16, 2025, with 18 votes in favor, all from opposition members, while the ruling Civil Contract party boycotted the session. In an interview, Ghukasyan expressed his willingness to consider running for Prime Minister of Armenia in 2026 if he received public support. He also advocated for a union state model similar to that of Belarus and promised Russian investment in Gyumri’s development, particularly in the healthcare sector and joint ventures. Ghukasyan stated he was unafraid of criticism for his views and emphasized Armenia’s need for a reliable partner while maintaining sovereignty. Despite opposing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s political views, Ghukasyan pledged to respect the office of the Prime Minister, indicating that his approach would depend on the government’s actions.
