Head of Russian Peacekeepers in Karabakh Blames Russian Defense Ministry for "Misuse of Toponyms" Demanded by Azerbaijan
On December 3, Major General Andrey Volkov, the Commander of the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh, said that Russian peacekeepers use Azerbaijani toponyms. However, the Ministry of Defense of Russia does not publish them.
"We respect Azerbaijani toponyms. We write all toponyms with the names sent to us by the Azerbaijani side, but, unfortunately, these names are not adhered to on the Ministry of Defense of Russia website. There they use toponyms that exist on the maps of the General Staff of the Soviet period. I cannot answer them. We specify all toponyms correctly and transfer them, including to the joint Russian-Turkish monitoring center. You can check it," he added.
Azerbaijan continuously demands from Russian side to use "proper toponyms"
On November 28, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported that despite the numerous discontent expressed by the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the names of Azerbaijani settlements are still being mentioned with Armenian toponyms in the official information of the Russian Federation's peacekeeping contingent.
"An end must be put to referring to the Karabakh economic region as the 'Nagorno-Karabakh territory.' In general, it is inadmissible to mention Azerbaijani territories with fictitious Armenian toponyms. We call on the command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent temporarily stationed in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan to mention the names of Azerbaijani settlements by the official documents provided to them. In the official information of the peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation, published on the official website of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation on 28.11.2022, the official names of the Azerbaijani settlements referred to as 'Mardakert,' 'Martuni,' 'Madagiz' and 'Getavan' are respectively AGHDARA, KHOJAVAND, SUGOVUSHAN, and GOZLUKORPU," the report added.
On November 29, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported that it is regrettable that the peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation ignored Baku's appeals.
"Regarding naming our settlements in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan with fictitious Armenian toponyms, including the use of the expression 'Nagorno-Karabakh territory,' we want to point out once again that this is NOT ALLOWABLE," the report added.
On November 30, the Ministry reported regretfully that the Russian Federation's peacekeeping contingent still shows a disdainful attitude towards their appeals.
On December 1, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry again reported, "We express regret for the disdainful attitude of the Russian Federation’s peacekeeping contingent towards our appeals."
"We reiterate that the mention of settlements’ names in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan by fictitious Armenian toponyms, including the usage of the 'Nagorno-Karabakh territory' expression, is INADMISSIBLE," the report added.
On December 2, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry regretfully reiterated that in the official information of the Russian Federation’s peacekeeping contingent, the names of Azerbaijani territories are still mentioned with fictitious Armenian toponyms.
On December 3, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry stated that it is regrettable that, despite numerous appeals, the names of Azerbaijani territories are still mentioned with fictitious Armenian toponyms in the official information of the Russian Federation’s peacekeeping contingent.
"We reiterate that Azerbaijan officially provided the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the former and current command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent temporarily stationed in the territory of Azerbaijan, as well as the Turkish-Russian Joint Monitoring Center with a list and map of settlements of the Karabakh economic region of the Republic of Azerbaijan that include names corresponding to Azerbaijani toponyms," the report added.
