Hikmet Hajiyev: "After Opening of Aghdam Road, Lachin Road Will be Opened Within 24 Hours"

On August 31, Hikmet Hajiyev, Azerbaijani Presidential Aide and the Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, said that Azerbaijan will not allow the presence of “any grey zone” on its territory.

According to him, Armenia has driven trucks to the Azerbaijani border at the Lachin checkpoint without coordination with Azerbaijan for populist purposes. "And as part of this theatrical drama, some corrupt European politicians influenced by the Armenian lobby recently arrived at the Azerbaijani border. Such steps do not make sense. Instead of such ostentatious steps, solving real issues on the ground is necessary. Azerbaijan will not allow any grey zone on its territory," he said.

The presidential representative also noted that the Aghdam-Khankendi road could be used to deliver any cargo to Azerbaijan's Karabakh region in a short time, as it has a large capacity and is more convenient for creating strong transport links. "This road runs on a flat terrain; it provides an opportunity to establish a strong transportation link with the city of Khankendi and other regions of Karabakh. Azerbaijan has repeatedly stated that the Aghdam-Khankendi road is fully functional. Any cargo can be delivered to Khankendi and its adjacent regions in a very short time," he added.

Furthermore, Hajiyev stated that refusing to use the Aghdam-Khankendi road can only be considered racism and discrimination. "Azerbaijan intends to start the reintegration process by opening the roads. As an integral part of this reintegration process, Azerbaijan is ready to ensure the rights and security of the Armenian residents living in Karabakh based on the Constitution of Azerbaijan and the international documents it supports," he underlined.

Hajiyev emphasized that the importance of the Agdam-Khankendi road has been reflected in international statements. According to him, the Armenian leadership accepted the possibility of using this road at the meetings held in Brussels: "In the next steps, the Armenian leadership denied it. Azerbaijan's approach was that after the opening of the route through Aghdam, the Lachin road will also be opened within 24 hours."
