Hungarian Ambassador Highlights Nakhchivan’s Renewable Energy Potential

| News, Economy, Azerbaijan

On May 15, Tamas Torma, the Hungarian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, stated that Nakhchivan possesses significant potential for renewable energy projects due to its abundant solar, wind, and hydropower resources.
The ambassador emphasized that Hungarian companies are interested in cooperating with Azerbaijan in the energy sector, noting that both sides aim to expand collaboration and utilize available opportunities for mutual benefit. Torma added that Hungarian specialists are actively working to identify suitable projects within this framework.
He also underlined that cooperation with Azerbaijan holds strategic importance for Hungary, encompassing both traditional and renewable energy sectors. According to Torma, the presence of major Hungarian companies already operating in Azerbaijan reflects the priority placed on bilateral partnership.
Notably, Nakhchivan boasts exceptional solar energy resources, with annual sunshine hours reaching up to 2,900 and solar radiation levels between 145–160 kcal/cm²—among the highest in Azerbaijan. The Nakhchivan Solar PV Park, operational since December 2015, spans 35 hectares and comprises 78,684 modules, generating approximately 3,000 MWh annually. Nakhchivan’s wind energy prospects are also promising. The Sharur-Julfa area within the region experiences average wind speeds of 3–5 m/s, suitable for wind turbine installations. Hydropower plays a significant role in Nakhchivan’s renewable energy landscape. In March 2025, the region’s power plants produced 29.5 million kWh of electricity, with 52.8% sourced from alternative and renewable energy, including hydroelectric power.
This aligns with Azerbaijan’s broader push for renewable energy, as highlighted in a previous Caucasus Watch article on May 14, where Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov emphasized partnerships with the EU and Central Asia to expand renewable energy opportunities during the EBRD annual meeting in London.
