Ilham Aliyev Does Not Accept Invitation to Visit Iran

| News, Azerbaijan

IRNA, Iran's state news agency, wrote that although Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan, was invited to visit Tehran, Baku has not accepted the invitation yet.

The agency accuses the Security Service of Azerbaijan of making unconstructive claims about the arrest of members of illegal armed groups with ties to Iran. "The Security Service of Azerbaijan reacted nervously to the visit of the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, to Iran, redistributing the old list and raising the expired issues," the agency stated.

Notably, relations between Azerbaijan and Iran have been strained recently. Iranian officials said they are against changing the borders in any form and are in a position to prevent it. Some deputies condemned Iran's training on the border with Azerbaijan.

Also, on November 4, the visit of Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, to Azerbaijan was postponed. Nothing was said about the reasons. It was noted that the visit would take place at a more favorable time.

Earlier, the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Iran had a telephone conversation, after which the Iranian foreign minister announced that the speaker of the Iranian parliament would visit Azerbaijan shortly.

As previously reported by Caucasus Watch, Aliyev underlined that there are many more Azerbaijanis living outside Azerbaijan than in the country alone. "Of course, their security, rights, and well-being are of the utmost importance to us. We will continue to do everything to help the Azerbaijanis who have found themselves cut off from our state, to assist them in their development so that they preserve the Azerbaijani language, Azerbaijani traditions, Azerbaijani culture, remain true to the principles of Azerbaijanism and never cut off ties with their historical homeland, just as many representatives of other peoples of our fraternal Turkic states live outside their states," he added.
