Ilham Aliyev Meets Zelenskyy, Sandu, Pashinyan at Second EPC Summit in Chișinău

On May 31, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, arrived in Moldova to participate in the 2nd European Political Community Summit, the Press Office of the Azerbaijani President reported.

Meeting with President of Moldova Maia Sandu

On the same day, Ilham Aliyev met with Maia Sandu, the President of Moldova, in Chișinău.

During the meeting, the sides hailed good relations between the two countries, touching upon the issues of cooperation in energy, investments, and other spheres. The meeting also focused on prospects for relations between Azerbaijan and Moldova. During the conversation, the sides emphasized good opportunities for further expansion of economic and trade relations, stressing the importance of accelerating efforts in this regard. The mutual support of both countries in international organizations was highly appreciated. In this regard, it was underlined that Azerbaijan and Moldova always support each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

President Maia Sandu assessed as a positive step the five-sided meeting of the Azerbaijani President with the support of President of the European Council Charles Michel, which will be held within the framework of the Summit of the European Political Community in Moldova with the participation of the Prime Minister of Armenia, the leaders of Germany and France.

Meeting with the Prime Minister of Moldova

On May 31, Aliyev met with Dorin Recean, the Prime Minister of Moldova, in Chișinău.

PM Dorin Recean expressed his gratitude for Azerbaijan's support to Moldova.

During the conversation, the sides hailed the high level of relations between Azerbaijan and Moldova, noting that there are ample opportunities for further development of trade and economic ties between the two countries. They noted that the current level of trade turnover cannot be considered satisfactory. The sides stressed the significance of diversification of trade turnover. In this regard, the importance of further intensifying the activity of the intergovernmental commission was emphasized.

During the conversation, the two also underlined great opportunities for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Moldova in agriculture, electric energy, investments, infrastructure projects, and other areas of mutual interest. It was emphasized that Moldova has extensive experience in viticulture and winemaking, and Azerbaijan has rich traditions in this field. They also pointed out the opportunities for expanding cooperation in this area.

Informal Meeting Among Aliyev, Pashinyan, Michel, Scholtz, and Macron

On June 1, an informal meeting was held between Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, European Union Council President Charles Michel, German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz, and French President Emmanuel Macron in the capital of Moldova.

After the meeting, Charles Michel said that today's negotiations were very productive and served as a good preparation for the meeting in Brussels on July 21. According to him, the parties are working intensively on normalizing relations and plan to repeat the meeting in Spain in this format. "We just had a very good meeting with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, President of France Emmanuel Macron, and Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholtz. We will review the issues discussed in Brussels in May regarding coordination, security, border delimitation, and peace agreement. We had the opportunity to discuss this. This meeting was a very good preparation for the next meeting to be held in Brussels on July 21. This means that we are working very hard. We intend to support all positive efforts towards the normalization of relations, and we also stated that President Aliyev, Prime Minister. We intend to invite Pashinyan, Chancellor Scholtz, and President Macron to a meeting again within the framework of the next "European political union" meeting in Spain. This means that we will do everything in our power to help the European Union achieve more progress towards the normalization of relations," he said.

Meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy

On June 1, the President of Azerbaijan met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine.

The presidents discussed bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Ukraine and the visit of President Ilham Aliyev to Ukraine in January 2022.

Satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Ukraine was expressed. President Ilham Aliyev said that a new ambassador of Azerbaijan to Ukraine has been appointed, and the ambassador will start working soon.

President Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the humanitarian assistance of Azerbaijan to Ukraine, the care given to Ukrainian children, and the organization of their visit to Azerbaijan, and said that it was highly appreciated.

During the conversation, it was noted with satisfaction that Azerbaijan and Ukraine support each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty within the framework of international organizations.

Pashinyan: "An agreement was reached to use the maps of 1975"

At a meeting with the Armenian community in Moldova, Nikol Pashinyan said that during the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in Chisinau, an agreement was reached to use the maps of 1975. 

According to him, as a result of the negotiations with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, held with the participation of the President of the Council of the European Union, Charles Michel, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and French President Emmanuel Macron, an agreement was reached on the use of 1975 maps during the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. "It can be said that the parties stressed that they are not against the 1975 maps being used as a basis for the work to be done on border delimitation," Pashinyan said. According to him, we are talking about the initial results of the negotiations, and it is still necessary to check Azerbaijan's reaction to the meeting.

Nikol Pashinyan recalled that Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on recognizing each other's territorial integrity based on the Almaty Declaration signed in Prague in October last year after the collapse of the USSR in 1991. "We reached this agreement in Prague, and going further in Brussels, we concluded that Azerbaijan recognizes the territorial integrity of Armenia on 29,800 square kilometers, and Armenia recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan on 86,600 square kilometers," he added.

"Regarding regional communications, we have confirmed that we are ready to open regional communications within the framework of our sovereignty and jurisdiction, according to the requirement of paragraph 9 of the tripartite statement of November 9, 2020," Pashinyan said.

The Prime Minister of Armenia also said there had been discussions regarding the negotiations regarding prisoners and hostages and rights and security issues of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, the general idea is that the issue of the rights and security of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians should be discussed in the Baku-Stepanakert dialogue format with international participation.
