Irakli Garibashvili Comments on Relations with Ukraine and Saakashvili's Condition

| News, Politics, Georgia

On July 19, Irakli Garibashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia, attended a memorial ceremony at the Holy Trinity Cathedral for those who went missing during the conflict in Abkhazia in the 1990s but were later found and returned to their home countries. He discussed relations with Ukraine and Saakashvili's condition after the event.

Garibashvili spoke about recent changes in Georgia-Ukraine ties, concentrating on the support for Saakashvili by the Ukrainian government. He emphasized the relationship between the Saakashvili case and the Western 'second front' narrative. Garibashvili stated: "The term 'second front' comes from high-ranking Ukrainian officials," recalling how the Secretary of the Security Council of Ukraine had remarked that Ukraine wished to open a 'second front' in Georgia and Moldova." He also noted that while the current Georgian government is not pro-war, Saakashvili's previous government would have started the war against Russia if it had been in power.

The prime minister further emphasized that given the difficulties Ukraine is facing, particularly in terms of counterattacks and territorial occupation, the focus on the Saakashvili issue is unreasonable. He said: "Twenty million Ukrainian nationals are in exile, 20% of Ukraine's territory is seized, more than a trillion dollars have been squandered, and tens of thousands of people have perished. Around 7 to 10 million people left the nation, while another 10 million remain internally displaced. If you have time to remark on a loser or a simulant in light of this tragedy and these difficulties, this raises concerns."

Commenting on the most recent diplomatic incident with Kyiv, the prime minister emphasized his additional anger by noting that other nations backing Russia were spared similar action, while Georgia was the only country from whom a Ukrainian ambassador had been summoned since the war began. "We don't ask for gratitude from anyone, but this is a breach of friendship, diplomacy, and etiquette," the prime minister added.

Moreover, Irakli Garibashvili commented on the latest FARA reports that the US State Department had made public. "These reports showed substantial financial donations from the family of the former president to American lobbying firms, along with specifics of their activity," he said. Garibashvili harshly criticized Saakashvili, accusing him of directing a shameful campaign against Georgia, fueled by millions of dollars from his family, aimed at tarnishing the country's image and reputation. "What could be more dishonorable, he said, than for the former president, who presided over this nation for nine years, to have his family pay millions of dollars and spend millions of dollars abroad to harm the reputation of our state?" Garibashvili added.

Garibashvili harshly criticized individuals who support Saakashvili's campaign and against the government, asserting that everyone who opposes the nation is an enemy of the state. "It's about our state, my friends, and anyone who consciously opposes our state is regrettably an enemy of our state," he continued. Garibashvili also questioned the anti-state project's financing source and the family's secret wealth: "Where is this multi-million-dollar anti-government campaign financed from?"

He also brought up Saakashvili's old allies' participation in Poland's election campaign, speculating that their actions were motivated by domestic political goals. In the words of Garibashvili, Georgia no longer wishes to continue cooperation with the Polish doctors. He said that Georgia's offer to treat Saakashvili's family on-site is still valid despite the Polish physicians' unconventional behavior.

The prime minister also addressed how Ukraine handled Saakashvili's issue, charging the Ukrainian authorities with failing to act on Georgia's evidence of Saakashvili's unauthorized entry into Ukraine. He said: "The issue is, why has there been no response so far? Why has there been no investigation? In addition to the fact that they have not responded or launched an inquiry, Saakashvili, the prisoner, is still in a position of authority."
