Irakli Garibashvili on EU Candidacy, Opposition, Zelenskyy, and Attack on Kakhovka Dam
Speaking to reporters in Kutaisi on June 6, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said, "If our European friends, colleagues, our real friends want to end polarization, or at least, to halve and minimize it, they should give us candidate status." The prime minister spoke on the 12 objectives that the European Commission had given to Georgia, saying that it was and is the duty of the current administration to comprehensively and honestly carry them out. He noted the complacent attitude of the destructive, bankrupt opposition in this process. He promised to finish all these processes by the end of June.
PM Garibashvili responded to Levan Khabeishvili's comments regarding the opposition banding together to defeat the Georgian Dream by saying, "I see a perspective that the opposition will be defeated once again and heavily in the 2024 elections." He stated, "These folks are just an average, marginalized force without a goal, without a different viewpoint or critique to give our society, our people."
Prime Minister Garibashvili said when asked by a journalist why he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not shake hands during their visit to Moldova: "Nothing extraordinary occurred; there were 45 leaders present, maybe five, six, or ten of them came up to Zelenskyy. There it was. There was no line to shake his hand." Garibashvili was asked what he would do if given the opportunity to meet Ukraine's president, "I would greet him. We wish Ukraine an end to the war, the reuniting of its lands, and peace. I have stated it openly, and I will tell it again," the PM said.
When asked about the explosion of the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine, the Prime Minister responded, "This is one of the consequences of this brutal war, the destructive war that Russia is waging in Ukraine, this is not new," adding that the Kakhovka HPP has surprised you, while 20% of the Ukrainian territory has been destroyed, cities, villages, have been razed to the ground." PM Garibashvili said peace has no alternative and stated, "We don't really see, and I don't think anyone can see real efforts to end this war or calls for negotiations; on the contrary - we see more escalation, more aggression."
When asked about the insulting campaign against police officers by opposition lawmakers, a journalist posed the following question: "Who are the enemies of our country?" Prime Minister Garibashvili said, "All those people who use insulting words about our heroic, commendable police are the enemies of our country." He added, "All who oppose the police...will be punished in an exemplary manner." He brought up the Girchi-More Freedom party in this context. He emphasized that, in his view, it is one of the most anti-national, anti-Georgian, neo-fascist developments and a completely immoral, degraded organization that has done everything to the detriment of the country's interests. The prime minister continued by mentioning the Droa party and Elene Khoshtaria, its head, and remarking on how they engage in destructive activities and insult people, including police officers.
