Irakli Garibashvili on Georgia's Economic Situation

| News, Economy, Georgia

On February 6, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili spoke about Georgia's future economic projects and the general financial situation.

He claimed that there is a 50, 60, 70 or 80% surcharge on rice, buckwheat, pasta, sugar, salt, and vegetable oil, to which is added at least a 25% to 30% retail premium, and that at that point the populace must buy these items with a 100% surcharge, which is unacceptable.

PM Garibashvili instructed the appropriate ministers to speak with importers and discuss ways to lower pricing. "I am hoping that [importers] would consider our requests and stance and respond appropriately. The quickest resolution to this problem is required." He added that it is his moral stance and that it is wrong to grow so wealthy at the cost of the general populace.

According to Garibashvili, the Tbilisi International Airport project, which will require an investment of USD 500 million, is the centerpiece of the government's ambitions to undertake several large-scale projects this year. "Batumi Airport's extension and total modernization will be the next phase. The government is reportedly working actively to begin building the Anaklia port this year," the head of Georgia emphasized. He also discussed big HPPs, adding that the government is modifying the Khudoni HPP to prevent flooding of rural churches and graves as a result of the project's deployment.

"The generation may be close to the same, according to our specialists, even though the capacity may be lowered. And if it occurs, we can only be happy about it," Prime Minister Garibashvili said, emphasizing that the state will participate in implementing such massive projects.

"The total rehabilitation of big cities would be made possible by the commencement of significant urban redevelopment projects in ten cities and ten regions," he added. "The most well-known tourist locations, including Borjomi, Bakuriani, Tskaltubo, Mestia, Kazbegi, Kutaisi, Batumi, and others, have been selected. We'll shortly give a comprehensive schedule," the Georgian Prime Minister promised.
