Iran has closed its airspace for Azerbaijani military cargo flights to the autonomous exclave of Nakhchivan, reported on 5 October.

"Iran's attempt to strike another blow to Azerbaijan will have little impact on military supplies to Nakhchivan. Azerbaijan makes very little use of this route and prefers to use other routes for cargo transportation," Azerbaijani media reported.

Meanwhile, Baku has closed down a mosque where the Iranian supreme leader's representative has his office.

Azerbaijani Interior Ministry spokesman Ehsan Zahidov explained the closure of the mosque as related to the Covid-19 pandemic. The mosque is in Nardaran, a village near Baku known for its pro-Iranian sentiments.

The tension between the two countries began to rise following Baku's decision to levy duty on Iranian lorries carrying goods from Iran to Armenia.

Iran's accusation that Baku has admitted Israel to its soil, followed by a drill by Iran's Army along borders with Azerbaijan, escalated tensions.

During his visit to the southern Jabrayil District, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev commented on the ongoing tension between Baku and Tehran. He dismissed Iranian allegations about Israeli presence in Azerbaijan as groundless and warned Tehran "not to poke its nose" into Baku's affairs.

Response from the Israeli ambassador to Iran's claim

Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben Zvi has denied allegations that Israeli troops were in Karabakh after the war in the region.

"I think this is great nonsense because if we are talking about the Karabakh region, there are both Russian and Turkish servicemen there. I think they can say that there are Martians there when they (Iran) have any fantasies," the ambassador told reporters during the Russian Jewish Congress.

Iran's start of military exercises on the border with Azerbaijan on October 1 caused dissatisfaction in Baku. President Ilham Aliyev noted that such training had not taken place during the 30-year occupation of some border areas with Iran.

The disagreement between Iran and Azerbaijan arose in September after Azerbaijan began to control the part of the Goris-Kapan road passing through its territory, checking the documents of Iranian drivers, and asking them to pay customs duties.
