On September 3, Amir Ohana, the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, arrived in Georgia on an official visit. Givi Mikanadze, the Head of the Georgia-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group, welcomed the official at Tbilisi International Airport.

Mikanadze said the visit of Amir Ohana is highly significant, which creates the potential to further deepen and expand the relations between the two countries. Mikanadze noted that the visit highlighted the intensive cooperation between the representatives of the highest political bodies of the two countries.

On the same day, the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset said that the Israeli side appreciated the Georgian population and the country's government's respect for Jewish communities and stressed that the relationship between the two countries has strengthened.

"We see with concern the growth of anti-Semitism in the world, but I respectfully say that you do not see it in Georgia. In Georgia, the population and the government respect the Jewish communities, and we can see that in this museum. We respect and appreciate that," Ohana noted. "The 2,600-year-old connection between Georgia and the Jewish people has become a true relationship between our two countries, and we have come to demonstrate these relations between the [two states] parliaments as well," he added.

On September 4, Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili discussed bilateral cooperation with Amir Ohana. 

The discussion involved prospects for further strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation and the importance of high-level meetings and cooperation within international organizations. 

Both officials highlighted the successful cooperation between their governments in all partnership formats. They pointed to the importance of further strengthening business contacts. 

In a meeting with the visiting Israeli counterpart Amir Ohana on the same day, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili highlighted bonds of friendship between the Georgian and Jewish peoples and noted the strong ties form the basis for a fruitful, multidimensional cooperation between the two states.

In his remarks at the press briefing following the meeting, Papuashvili noted that the Georgian authorities appreciated the visit and intensive communication between the sides that was taking place on the backdrop of a difficult, challenging geopolitical situation. "The Georgian and Jewish people are connected by a 26-century friendship, and these strong ties create a solid foundation for the development of fruitful and multidimensional cooperation between Georgia and Israel," Papuashvili said. Papuashvili also extended his gratitude to the Israeli government for supporting Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and the non-recognition policy of the country's Russian-occupied regions.

"Also, we hope that in 2024, the negotiations on signing a free trade agreement will begin and create even more opportunities in the relationship between our countries and peoples", Papuashvili noted.

The meeting also reviewed the cooperation between the two countries in economy, tourism, culture and security, and Parliamentary ties.
