Israeli MPs Appeal to Foreign Ministry for Support for Independence of "South Azerbaijan"

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

MPs of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, appealed to the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and asked for international support for the independence of "South Azerbaijan." 32 MPs, making up a quarter of all Knesset members, asked the Israeli Foreign Ministry to pay attention to Tehran's repressive policy against the Iranian opposition and the population of Iranian Azerbaijan.

The address of the MPs states: "This is the largest ethnic group in Iran, numbering more than 20 million. The regime is carrying out a policy of cultural genocide against this group by restricting the Azerbaijani minority from learning its heritage and language and passing it on to future generations, as well as from giving their children Azerbaijani names."

According to the letter's authors, supporting the separatist movement in South Azerbaijan (North Iran) can seriously blow Tehran. They wrote that South Azerbaijan would become an ally of Israel and Azerbaijan in the future.

The Israeli media points out that one-third of the MPs who signed the letter represent extreme religious factions in the parliament. It is noted that these MPs are rarely interested in the international agenda. But the letter was also signed by the active opponents of the religious bloc - representatives of the "Our Home is Israel" party, including the head of the party, former Soviet citizen Avigdor Lieberman.

Notably, Azerbaijanis are Iran’s most significant ethnic minority, numbering at least 20 million. According to some estimates, up to 20-30 million live in Iran - almost one-quarter of the population. Reportedly, Azerbaijanis have faced political and cultural discrimination. The US State Department reported that the government prohibited Azerbaijanis from speaking their language in schools, harassed Azerbaijani activists, and changed Azerbaijani town names.
