Kadyrov's words about women and the actions of the Chechen authorities
Showing respect for women is in line with Chechen traditions and is not considered shameful, Ramzan Kadyrov announced. This statement came against the background of the practice of public censure of women and pressure on girls who wear niqabs, adopted in Chechnya.
Ramzan Kadyrov positions himself as the guardian of Chechen traditions. In October 2019, the Grozny State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company published a TV piece entitled “Historical Address by the Head of the Chechen Republic,” in which Kadyrov advocated the preservation of strict traditional norms at funerals. Controlling each person is possible only through traditions, and Kadyrov "is trying to portray himself as a true Chechen, to show that he and only he has the right to decide how to whom to behave," said Professor Alexei Malashenko, head of scientific research at the Dialogue of Civilizations Institute.
People who do not understand the intricacies of Islam and Chechen traditions mistakenly believe that misogyny prevails in Chechen society, Ramzan Kadyrov wrote on his VKontakte page.
“But what can we say, even some harsh and strict horsemen believe that showing respect for mothers, sisters, and wives in the form of a bouquet of flowers, gifts, and warm congratulations is a shameful act. You should not be so hard on the fair and weaker sex. It’s not easy for them anyway. There is no doubt that we should be patient with our women, show them more attention and warmth, take care of them," wrote the head of Chechnya.
“The day before yesterday we had a wonderful occasion to be with our family, to make our dear women happy and congratulate them on Mother's Day. But, as always, there are those who turn this upside down and accuse Muslims of celebrating non-Muslim dates. They do not know how to be grateful even to their mothers, who gave them life! For them I explain: our celebrations are not feasts with drinking alcoholic drinks and not discos in night bars," Kadyrov wrote.
The authors of the comments under Ramzan Kadyrov's post agreed on the need to show respect for women. At the same time, the user Anton Varyushin, who called himself a resident of Moscow, criticised Kadyrov’s post.
“In words, this is all beautiful, but in fact, for some reason, the rights of women in the southern republics are mercilessly infringed. I’m already silent about countries that live according to Sharia law. But I do my best to support the message to respect women and their rights,” he wrote.
Recall that in September 2019, Ramzan Kadyrov, publicly commenting on wedding videos published on social networks, said that he would not allow violators of local customs to live in Chechnya. After that, five wedding participants recorded an apology video. Among them was a cultural worker who publicly apologised for singing at the wedding. “We filmed this video for the family archive. We knew that such songs did not correspond to Chechen decency and norms. From now on, we will be vigilant because of our mistake,” the woman shared.
Chechen blogger Tumso Abdurakhmanov then recalled that earlier Kadyrov had violated customs by talking on a federal channel about his relationship with his wife. YouTube users agreed that Kadyrov has no moral right to criticise violators of Chechen traditions.
