Kobakhidze Calls on UK to Apologize for BBC Report
On December 9, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the UK must apologize to Georgia for the BBC’s report alleging the use of chemical weapons against protesters in Tbilisi. Kobakhidze emphasized that, in his view, "the UK should apologize for the BBC's fake news, as it is their public broadcaster," describing the report as "a completely artificial attempt to create a scandal based on falsehoods."
He noted that the investigation had already been closed. Kobakhidze stressed that Georgian authorities are ready to provide information regarding the State Security Service investigation to any international organization upon request.
He recalled the events of April 9, 1989, when chemical agents were actually used during the dispersal of a protest, overwhelming hospitals, and stated that genuine chemical agents inevitably lead to "very serious consequences." Referring to the current situation in 2024, he noted that only five individuals sought medical assistance for mild intoxication and were discharged immediately.
