Kobakhidze Reveals Talks with Ukrainian President as Relations Face Strain

| News, Politics, Georgia

On May 27, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, stated that he held a conversation with the President of Ukraine during which the issue of resetting bilateral relations was discussed. Kobakhidze noted that any further progress in this direction would depend on "concrete practical steps," emphasizing that "the rest depends, of course, on practical steps."

Kobakhidze stated that relations between the two governments had deteriorated due to a series of specific actions. He explained that these included the recall of the Georgian ambassador from Ukraine, which he described as effectively an expulsion, as well as disagreements over sanctions and the decision not to send volunteer fighters to Ukraine with official approval. He also referred to calls from Ukrainian officials regarding the opening of a "second front," adding that "these were extremely serious steps that worsened relations between the governments."

At the same time, Kobakhidze emphasized that such developments should not affect the broader ties between the countries and peoples, which he described as having a strong historical foundation. He further stated that "if there is interest, we are fully ready to reset relations between our governments."
