Major Georgian Parties Unite for Pro-European 'Platform for Victory': A Pre-Election Twist
On July 20, Giorgi Vashadze, the head of Strategy Aghmashenebeli, and Levan Khabeishvili, the United National Movement (UNM) chairman, declared a pre-election agreement.
Khabeishvili said that UNM, as the largest pro-European party, decided to put together a "platform for victory" with other pro-Western parties. "Following extensive negotiations, we have come to a consensus with the party, which all surveys and studies indicate is also the greatest pro-Western party among the parties. I'm talking about Aghmashenebeli's plan," Khabeishvili stated.
Vashadze stated that the alliance's goals include solving [citizens'] problems, accelerating Georgia's accession to NATO and the European Union, de-occupation, and restoration of territorial integrity.
Reactions
Kakha Kaladze, the General Secretary of the Georgian Dream and Mayor of Tbilisi, said, "I don't think this will alter anything. I don't want to delve into such depths because I don't know if these folks are unable or unwilling to recognize their primary issues or if they fail to examine them. It is obvious that nothing can change if these two losers join forces." He added: "They will choose who will align themselves with whom and what electoral strategy to use. The future of my country's population, the continuation of the changes sparked by the Georgian Dream, and the completion of the ongoing projects in all of the nation's regions, villages, and towns are, for me as a citizen of my country, the essential things."
According to Mikheil Sarjveladze from Georgian Dream, the claim that the 'Victory Platform' was created is only a promotional ploy. "They understand that the moniker 'Platform of Defeat' would be more fitting for this union. It is undeniable that they have a chance of failing seriously. These two political parties did not choose this for the good life. In the case of Strategy Aghmashenebeli, the issue is that it has no chance of independently gaining popular support during the elections, ensuring its existence in politics. Because of this, the political party having trouble getting over the obstacle decides to rely on someone more powerful to achieve 'victory,'" he added.
Mikheil Saakashvili, the former President of Georgia, stated: "I embrace building a victory platform with extremely fascinating leaders. I particularly like the idea that candidates for all [future] posts should be chosen based on who has their support at any given time and that the Prime Minister and other Ministers would be chosen based on that. Even in their darkest nightmare, the 'government' does not consider a peaceful transition of power. Even yet, they will have to do it, and the sooner they give it some thought, the better for them and, obviously, for the nation's future. I want to make a specific comment on Giorgi Vashadze. In the first administration of the Rose Revolution, he was successful and one of the most effective reformers."
Irakli Kupradze, the General Secretary of Lelo for Georgia, emphasized: "Such a union is not interesting. Regrouping around the ‘National Movement’ does not serve the order of Georgian society. It is inevitable to create a third alternative center, to which we will invite those pro-Western parties that do not see themselves alongside the National Movement".
Iago Khvichia, the leader of the "Girchi," stated: "Khabeishvili and Vashadze will unite, and everything will be fine? We do not find this convincing because [they] were united both inside the [National Movement] and outside of it, but that brought no significant changes in the social and political life of the country."
