Major Israeli Newspaper Reveals Weapon Trade Between Israel and Azerbaijan
On March 6, the Israeli newspaper "Haaretz" wrote that in the last seven years, Azerbaijan's "Silk Way Airlines" cargo company had made 92 flights to Ovda airport in the south of Israel. The portal added that "Silk Way Airlines" is one of the few foreign companies that landed in Ovda and has permission to transport weapons from Israeli airspace.
Ovda is the only Israeli air base authorized to receive flights carrying weapons, the study said. Unlike Ovda, which is located in the Negev desert, Israel's Ben Gurion airport is located in a densely populated area in the center of the country, so cargo planes with explosives are not allowed to enter there. Ovda serves civil and military flights at the same time. It is noted that some of the flights to this airport are carried out with the sign of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan.
Silk Way is one of the largest cargo companies in Asia. "Haaretz" noted that "Silk Way Airlines" operates three flights between Baku airport and Ben Gurion every week. The newspaper wrote that it was announced for the first time that the company's IL-76 planes have made at least 92 flights in the last seven years to Ovda, which is considered an unusual place for civilian cargo planes.
