Maka Botchorishvili Rejects Rubio’s Label of Georgian Dream as "Anti-American Government"

On May 22, Maka Botchorishvili, Georgia's Foreign Minister, responded to U.S. Senator Marco Rubio’s remarks labeling the Georgian Dream government in Tbilisi as "anti-American" by rejecting the claim as baseless and emphasizing the continued strong ties between Georgia and the United States.
During her appearance on pro-government Rustavi 2’s nightly show on May 22, Botchorishvili criticized a question raised by Representative Joe Wilson at a congressional hearing, describing it as "built entirely on a disinformation narrative." Botchorishvili stated that Wilson’s remarks about allegedly rigged elections in Georgia and his characterization of the Georgian Dream government as "anti-American" were false and misrepresented reality.
She further emphasized the importance of assessing Rubio’s response within the broader context of the hearing, noting, "The only conclusion we can draw from [Rubio’s] response today is that a definitive position regarding Georgia has not yet been established in the context of America’s national interests."
Botchorishvili dismissed suggestions that the Georgian Dream government could be considered anti-American, stating, "We have enjoyed strong systemic cooperation with the United States, and there is no reason to question that cooperation." She concluded by asserting that Georgia remains in a "waiting mode," as Rubio’s remarks confirmed the absence of a clear policy position on Georgia within the current U.S. administration.
