On August 26, during a solemn meeting honoring the Day of Recognition of [the separatist] South Ossetia's Independence by Russia, Deputy Head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev extended his congratulations to [the de-facto]  South Ossetian President Alan Gagloev and the people of the unrecognized republic on the 16th anniversary of its recognition. 

In his statement, Medvedev assured that Russia remains committed to supporting South Ossetia in strengthening its statehood. He emphasized that the alliance and integration between Russia and South Ossetia have positively influenced the region's political stability and economic growth. Medvedev also noted that South Ossetia's identity, traditions, and spiritual foundations are regarded as part of a shared historical heritage in Russia. "We are ready to continue all-round assistance to the Republic in strengthening its statehood and progressive development," the message read.

Similarly, Medvedev congratulated the de-facto President of the separatist Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, on the Day of International Recognition of Abkhazia's Independence. He reflected on August 26, 2008, as the start of a new chapter in the history of the "brotherly Abkhazian people." Over the past 16 years, Abkhazia has made significant strides in state-building and socio-economic development. Medvedev emphasized that the conditions are now set for further enhancing the well-being of the republic's residents. He expressed confidence that the traditionally strong trust between Moscow and Sukhum would continue to bolster the relations of alliance and strategic partnership and preserve their peoples' rich historical and cultural heritage.
