Mikheil Kavelashvili Meets Azerbaijani Officials in Baku to Discuss Strategic Partnership and Regional Cooperation

On April 15 and 16, Mikheil Kavelashvili, President of Georgia, held a series of high-level meetings in Baku with Azerbaijani officials, including Prime Minister Ali Asadov, Speaker of Parliament Sahiba Gafarova, and President Ilham Aliyev. Both sides emphasized their strategic partnership, regional cooperation, and mutual commitment to peace and development in the South Caucasus.

During the meeting on April 15, Prime Minister Ali Asadov met with President Mikheil Kavelashvili, who was on an official visit to Azerbaijan. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the robust development of friendly relations and the strategic partnership between their countries, discussing opportunities to expand cooperation across various sectors.

On April 16, Kavelashvili met Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament. In a post on X, the Georgian President wrote, "As part of my official visit to Baku, I, along with the Georgian delegation, held a meeting with the Chairperson of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, Ms. Sahiba Gafarova. We discussed the historically strong friendship between our nations and the key aspects of the Georgia-Azerbaijan strategic partnership." He highlighted the productive cooperation between the two parliaments and the potential for deepening this collaboration.

On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev held a one-on-one meeting with President Kavelashvili, followed by press statements from both leaders.

Aliyev underscored the significance of major infrastructure projects jointly implemented by Azerbaijan and Georgia, stating, "The oil and gas projects, pipelines, and transport and communication initiatives we have undertaken together are of great importance." He noted that these projects have reshaped the energy and transportation landscape of not only the South Caucasus but also the broader Eurasian region, adding, "Azerbaijan currently exports natural gas to 12 countries, including Georgia, with these exports transiting through Georgia." Aliyev also highlighted the success of their joint efforts in the Middle Corridor, emphasizing the increasing volume of cargo passing through their territories.

In his remarks, Kavelashvili stressed the unity between the Georgian and Azerbaijani peoples, saying, "The Georgian and Azerbaijani peoples stand together and will continue to stand together in defending the values vital to our nations." He expressed confidence that the strategic and neighborly ties between the two countries would continue to strengthen. Addressing regional developments, he welcomed the completion of negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia on all provisions of a peace agreement and expressed hope for a historic deal that would ensure long-term regional peace.

Kavelashvili reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to diplomacy and peaceful coexistence in the South Caucasus, stating, "Georgia has always supported dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful coexistence in the South Caucasus, and this approach will continue." He emphasized the importance of resisting external interference and double standards, saying, "No third country or organization knows better than us what is best for our peoples." He concluded by thanking President Aliyev and stressed that the two countries should continue to serve as a strong, unifying bridge on the geopolitical map, fully leveraging the region’s potential for the benefit of their nations.
