Ned Price on Putin's Remarks About Washington Plan and Sochi Meeting
On October 28, Ned Price, the Spokesman of the US State Department, stated that distortions, more precisely, disinformation from Moscow about US intentions regarding the Armenia-Azerbaijan settlement continue.
According to him, there is no greater partner than the United States for the sovereignty and independence of South Caucasus countries, including Armenia and Azerbaijan. "The restoration of independence of Armenia and Azerbaijan from the Soviet Union in 1991 was a significant event that guaranteed each of these countries the right to realize their foreign political and other interests independently of Moscow or any other country," he added. The Spokesman of the US State Department stated that Washington encouraged Armenia and Azerbaijan to meet in a format suitable for them.
"We believe that direct dialogue will help solve problems and achieve lasting peace," Price said. "The United States works with Armenia and Azerbaijan with one goal - to end the violence and bring these countries to a path of lasting and comprehensive peace," he added.
Regarding the question about the tripartite talks to be held in Sochi, Price said that Azerbaijan and Armenia should decide what approach they will use in those talks. "I think that when it comes to neighbors, the world knows the history of Russia. Russia's 2008 invasion of Georgia and its ongoing brutal assault on Ukraine show that Moscow does not respect the sovereignty of its neighbors and is unlikely to be a reliable, long-term partner. We think this is completely at odds with the United States," Price concluded.
Earlier, while speaking at the "Valdai" forum on October 27, Caucasus Watch reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia did not dictate to Armenia in the peace treaty with Azerbaijan and added that the choice of option for the peace agreement is at Armenia's discretion. But he stressed that the proposal from Washington reflects Azerbaijan's sovereignty over [the unrecognized Nagorno-] Karabakh. "If the Armenian people or the leadership of Armenia believe that the Washington version of the peace agreement, which provides for the recognition of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over Karabakh as a whole, should be chosen, then they can. If the Armenian leadership believes that Karabakh has its characteristics and these characteristics should be considered and discussed in the future peace agreement, this is also possible. But, of course, it is necessary to agree with Azerbaijan. These agreements must be acceptable to the other party - Azerbaijan," Vladimir Putin added. He said that Russia has been holding a dialogue with Armenia for many years to solve the issue of Karabakh.
