Netherlands Hesitant to Support Georgia's EU Candidacy Amid Slow Progress

| News, Politics, Georgia

In a recent document on the EU Commission Enlargement Package addressed to the Dutch Parliament, the Dutch government expressed caution about supporting the European Commission's recommendation to grant Georgia candidate status for EU accession, given the limited progress on most of the twelve priorities set out by the Commission.

According to the text, the Cabinet underscores the significance of an enlargement process that is merit-based and accepts the European Commission's geopolitical concerns in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to the Dutch government, maintaining regional stability is one reason why ties with Georgia should be further strengthened. "Although most member states appear to support Georgia's candidature, negotiations with Georgia can only start when there is sustainable progress on the steps identified by the Commission," the statement reads.

The Cabinet views the Commission's proposal to begin accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine favorably. However, caution is exercised with Georgia due to its alleged slow development. According to the statement, the European Commission's proposal for these two nations is reasonable and well-rounded, and the Cabinet generally supports the Commission's request to begin accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine. The statement noted that before a negotiating framework can be approved, Moldova and Ukraine must complete the remaining measures as recommended by the Commission, and the Cabinet supports these actions.
