North Caucasus Countries Among Worst Regions to Live in Russia
Ingushetia, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kalmykia, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Chechnya were among the ten worst regions of Russia in the rating of the state agency RIA Novosti in 2022. It assessed the population's quality of life, socio-economic conditions, labor market, and other criteria.
The first places in the rating were taken by Moscow (83 points), St. Petersburg (81), Moscow region (73), and Tatarstan (68). Of the southern regions, the Krasnodar Territory (59 points, 11th place) and the Rostov Region (57 points, 15th place) turned out to be the most prosperous. Closer to the end of the rating are Adygea (43 points, 60th place) and Astrakhan region (41 points, 64th place), neighboring Krasnodar Territory.
All the republics of the North Caucasus were among the lagging subjects. Dagestan ranks 72 out of 85 with 37 points, Chechnya is slightly lower with 32 points and 75th place. This is followed by Kabardino-Balkaria (31 points, 77th place), North Ossetia (29 points, 78th place), Karachay-Cherkessia (26 points, 82nd place), and Ingushetia, which took 83rd place with 22 points. "The situation is worse only in the Jewish Autonomous Region and Tuva," the report stated.
