PACE Urges Georgia To Stop Prosecution of Opposition Figures
On November 19, the co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for monitoring Georgia issued a statement urging the authorities to halt the prosecution of opposition figures.
The co-rapporteurs expressed "deep concern" over the initiation of criminal proceedings against opposition politicians, warning that they could face long prison sentences on fabricated charges "for crimes against the state". Estrela and Ćudić emphasized that the accusations were "clearly politically motivated" and linked them to recent appeals submitted to the Constitutional Court seeking to ban several major opposition parties. They stressed that "such actions have no place in a democratic society" and urged the authorities to stop measures that "would effectively establish dictatorship in Georgia". They "deeply regretted" that government representatives refused to meet them and that authorities denied their request to visit Mzia Amaghlobeli in prison.
