Pashinyan visits Georgia

| News, Armenia, Georgia

On 3 March, the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visited Georgia at the invitation of Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. Besides meeting with Gakharia, Pashinyan also held talks with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze and Patriarch Ilia II.

Gakharia thanked Pashinyan for accepting his invitation and for visiting Georgia. He noted that the two countries live in a difficult region and that the governments of Georgia and Armenia understand that peace and stability are the bases for both of their continuing development.  “First of all we need to care about peace and then about developing our countries’ economy, culture, education”, he said. Gakharia also welcomed Armenia's active cooperation within the framework of the Eastern Partnership, and stated that he believes this is the direction in which the two countries should cooperate effectively. He also underlined that Euro-Atlantic integration is its guarantee for peace, stability, and security and that Georgia is moving in that direction.

“From a regional point of view, our relationship with Georgia is special. We consider that the path of democratic development of our countries has an even more important factor for the development of our peoples' relations. This, along with many other factors, is another cornerstone of our development. Relations with Georgia have moved to a qualitatively different level over the past year and a half, and we believe that they will be further strengthened after this meeting”, Pashynian said. He underlined that there is vast unused potential in Georgia-Armenia relations. “Democratization has a big importance. I believe that if Georgia and Armenia are perceived as democratic territories, the attraction of our countries will further increase. We respect Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration aspiration and it seems that the two countries have different opinions regarding the security system. But I think that we have a common standpoint,” he added. He also said that the only solution to regional problems is peace talks, and there is no alternative to them.

At the meeting with Zourabichvili, the two officials talked about "matters of importance" for economic and political cooperation. Zourabichvili herself noted the importance of the two countries working together for "keeping stability and ensuring peace" in the South Caucasus.

At the meeting with Talakvadze, the bilateral relations between the Armenian and Georgian parliaments were emphasized. The parties  highlighted the fact that the two countries can find new opportunities for the implementation of joint and mutually beneficial projects and programs through intensive dialogue.

At the meeting with Ilia II, the friendly relations between the two countries, as well as the current developments in the world were the main topics. “There is a clear opportunity to start planning the future of our countries together, despite all existing threats in the region,” Pashinyan tweeted after the meeting.
