President Zourabichvili Demands Georgian Diplomats Defend European Aspirations
On November 3, during the Day of Georgian Diplomacy, President Salome Zourabichvili criticized Georgian diplomats for their silence regarding what she described as the Georgian government's disregard for the long-aspired European path and its steps toward Russia.
She directly addressed Georgian diplomats, asking, “If you don’t dare to resign, raise your voice, or express a different opinion, what do you have left? Are you so afraid?”
Zourabichvili noted that the Day of Georgian Diplomacy was established 20 years ago through her initiative, connecting it to the legacy of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, a Georgian writer and diplomat from the 17th–18th centuries. Orbeliani, she highlighted, sought European support for King Vakhtang VI and embodied Georgia’s European aspirations. “We should be celebrating such an anniversary with pride!” she remarked, emphasizing that Sulkhan-Saba symbolizes Georgia's European path, “which we will only achieve through diplomacy.”
The president further stressed, "Peace is indeed in danger when the country does not have good diplomacy,” adding, “Freedom is in danger when those who serve the country are afraid of their own shadow,” and “Independence is in danger when those who are supposed to sound the alarm to our partners abroad fail to notice Russia's hybrid actions!”
Additionally, Zourabichvili condemned the diplomats for not assisting the Georgian diaspora in securing their right to participate in elections. “History will not forget this! Stop mentioning Sulkhan-Saba; invoking his name will not save you, and you are casting a shadow on his legacy."
