President Zourabichvili to be Questioned in Election Investigation as Georgian Prosecutors Examine Fraud Claims

| News, Politics, Georgia

On October 30, the Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office announced the launch of an investigation into alleged tampering in the parliamentary elections.

The office also confirmed that Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili was summoned for questioning on October 31, citing statements from the CEC and online sources indicating she may hold evidence of electoral fraud.

“The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia will carry out all necessary investigative and procedural actions, as indicated in the directive of the CEC, in order to examine the facts reported by the President of Georgia, individual political parties, and representatives of observer missions. Among them, within the framework of the investigation, all those who may have information related to the alleged criminal act will be questioned,” the Prosecutor’s statement declared. The office additionally highlighted that law enforcement agencies had already initiated several criminal investigations into specific violations identified during the pre-election period and on election day, with a commitment to regularly update the public on their findings.

On October 29, the Central Election Commission announced its request to the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate what it described as “unfounded accusations” levied against it following the election results. The CEC emphasized that the OSCE/ODIHR had positively assessed the election process, that the CEC had performed “at the highest level,” and that an American auditing firm had found “no flaws” in the election technology used. Nonetheless, it noted that the Georgian President and certain political parties continued to “attack and baselessly criticize” the CEC’s work in an alleged effort to “cause reputational damage” to the institution.
