Protesters in Separatist Abkhazia Demand Departure of De-facto Prime Minister
On May 30, Adgur Ardzinba, one of the leaders of the Abkhaz opposition, voiced the protesters' demands at a rally in Sokhumi. They did not demand the resignation of de-facto President Aslan Bzhania, but will demand the resignation of de-facto Prime Minister Oleksandr Ankvab.
"We will not demand the president's resignation but make a compromise decision - sign a decree on the resignation of the cabinet of ministers," the opposition leader said during the rally. According to Ardzinba, it was Bzhania and Ankvab who forced the opposition to come to the rally today.
"I don’t understand what Bzhania and Ankvab are fighting for today. For foreign investors? Attempts to stop them through compromise and dialogue have not brought results. They forced us to get together. We demand to abandon destructive initiatives that pose a threat to our state. We demand to change state policy and direct it to national interests. It is the president who is responsible for everything that happens. Aslan Bzhania lost his legitimacy by refusing to protect the interests of his citizens," Ardzinba said.
On the same day, Bzhania received delegates from the opposition. Following the meeting, Adgur Ardzinba said the president would not fulfill their demands. "President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania is not going to dismiss the cabinet of ministers headed by Alexander Ankvab," he added.
