Public Unrest Feared as Georgian Orthodox Church Opposes Tbilisi Pride Week
In reaction to Tbilisi Pride Week, taking place on July 1–8, the Georgian Orthodox Church published a statement on July 2 calling for legislative action against the attempts to implant "a perverse lifestyle."
The statement stated that the Pride Week activities would be detrimental even if held indoors. According to the Church, the LGBT propaganda mentality is unacceptable, especially in a nation with deep-rooted Christian values and a centennial cultural heritage. According to their argument, any such "propaganda" directed at minors is violence against their consciousness.
According to the Georgian Orthodox Church, organizing such activities disregarding the repeated protest from a significant portion of Georgia's population, betrays contempt for the country's fundamental ideals and indicates a deliberate attempt to subvert moral standards. The Church emphasized that in addition to spreading "propaganda of sin," such gatherings exacerbate tensions and provoke public unrest, as shown by the rising division of society during LGBT celebrations. The Church emphasized the necessity to cure tension factors at the early stage. "The Church never calls for violence but instead cares for promoting peace; thus, it urges society to start a conversation about resolving the problem through legislative means," the statement added.
